MENTAL HEALTH

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

WHO Constitution

Mental health is more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities. Mental wellbeing is the foundation for emotions, thinking, communication, learning, resilience and self-esteem. Psychological and emotional wellness is also key to relationships.

Mental illness is a health condition involving changes in emotion, thinking or behaviour (or a combination of these). Psychological illnesses are related to distress and/or problems functioning in social, work or family activities. Many people who have dysfunctional behaviour would prefer not to discuss it with others. Mental illness does not discriminate; it can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, geography, income, social status, race/ethnicity, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, background or other aspects of cultural identity. No need to be embarrassed about it, it is a medical condition and can be dealt with. Untreated mental illness can cause mental disorders.

There are many different types of mental disorders. Some common ones include

  • Anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and phobias
  • Depression, bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia

Sagar Counselling Centre advances mental health and gives psychological assessment and psychotherapy treatment to clients and professional counselling to their family members.
